Over the past few years Iโve had some very difficult interactions at work (and in my personal life). I came away from more than one of them thinking (singing)
Too direct
Too intense
Too tangential
Too much
But then, in other contexts, Iโve had almost the opposite experience. Same brain, same personality but this time the feedback was:
โThis is brilliantโ
โThatโs exactly what we neededโ
Iโd never have thought of that
โCan you look at this?โ
What changed? Not me - the environment.
Iโm drawn to the โdifferent operating systemsโ analogy for neurodiversity (ADHD combined type in my case). Itโs simple and easy to communicate but I think itโs incomplete so I pushed it in this visual (๐ต๐ฉ๐ถ๐ด ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ด๐ช๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ช๐ค๐ช๐ต๐บ - welcome to my busy brain!).
Brains that process inputs differently leads to different outputs. What gets flagged as an โerrorโ depends on the barriers in between โ physical, social, attitudinal, communicative. When we treat those outputs as defects in the individual, thatโs the medical model at work.
The social model shifts the focus to removing the barriers.
Having people that run a different operating system (multiple in some cases) isnโt the problem, itโs designing a world for just one. People with less compatible systems will get error messages, have to work twice as hard and then probably crash.
Being different isnโt an error, sometimes itโs just a compatibility issue - and compatibility is a design choice.
Within the workplace, this post looks at what happens when those different operating systems arenโt treated as faults to fix, but as variations that teams and organisations can actually benefit from:
Why ADHD colleagues are crucial to any workforce
Itโs very easy to get caught up in the downsides of neurodiversity; we live in a world not built for our brains and can get overwhelmed trying to fit in but, in an indulgent moment masquerading as research, I spoke to some colleagues I have known for many years about the upsides of dealing with an ADHDer (including me โ card carrying combined-type) and โฆ
